West Fayu Atoll
Uninhabited
and one of most remote islands in the Central Carolines Islands, West Fayu
is traditionally used as a jumping off point for navigators in
traditionally-made sailing canoes voyaging to Guam or Saipan, a distance
of between 400-500 miles. It is also used as a "test" island by apprentice
navigators from Lamotrek,
Satawal and Polowat (Puluwat) to see if they have mastered the lessons
taught to them about star courses, wave patterns, and sea marks.
