Chief
Manepiy is also a recognized master navigator. Earlier in the year,
he took a crew of four apprentices on a teaching voyage on a traditionally-made
sailing canoe named Solo that lasted more than a month. In the
course of their journey they visited West Fayu Atoll (see photo "Messages
on Palm Fronds at West Fayu Atoll"), Satawal Island, Lamotrek Atoll,
Elato Atoll, and Olimarau Atoll before finally returning to Polowat —
a
voyaging circuit that covered over 500 miles.
