Red Clay Deposits in Yap

The red clay of Yap is prized for its mythological connections to dieties in the Sky World.  Used for painting canoes and also as a sacred decoration for protection and magic by ritual specialists such as navigators.  The best area for collecting the redest samples is in the Gachom highlands.  This is also the site where it is said knowledge of canoe-making first came down to earth from the Sky World.
